Yes, I am still doing this project, still reading and writing thoughts. However, I'm in the middle of monsoon season where I live so my internet connection is iffy at best. Reading fic on my phone is fine, posting thinky thoughts is not.

So be prepared for a lot of backdated entries this weekend as I take my laptop to Starbucks and post away. :)

Deep Thoughts

Unfortunately, Wednesdays are the only night of the week that I actually *watch* live tv. Top Chef is on earlier and then followed by Work of Art.

I don't know where along the way I got sick of live tv. It was maybe the commercials or the inconvient timing. Or it could just be that there really aren't that many good shows on anymore. Each season, the networks seem to tout out more and more crap while cancelling quality shows without a chance for them to get footing.

I think that is why I like cable and premium so much. A show can have a small but loyal viewership and it stays on the air. It's quality over quantity. I would rather have 13 episodes of totally brilliant television than 22 episodes of mediocrity.

What kills me is the cancelling of shows before they can gain an audience. If NBC had kept that model in the early 90s, Seinfeld and Friends would have been cancelled after the first season. What ever happened to letting a show get buzz? Good word of mouth? Everything in our culture these days is instant gratification.

So yeah, after watching my reality show Wednesday, I was too tired for fic. I went to bed instead. Sorry Cordelia/Angel, sometimes a nice bed and snuggle kitties has to win over fandom.

Beyond Fingertips by Syn (r)

Deep Thoughts

That means I'm done with the Ws and got one of the Bs done since it's first was a W. I'm going to move onto the uvs tomorrow. I figure that way, I'm staying balanced (#, a, b) vs (w, xyz). Plus I just really want to do uv. Don't ask me why. Something is calling to me and I might as well just ride it out right? It is my project after all.

Reading Beyond Fingertips, I was really amazed at the talent in the C/A community. I was totally riveted to it and it felt all so real, like this other spinoff show or a fever dream where Angelus and a vampire Cordelia terrorize New Orleans, where Oz has to battle his very nature. I'm usually not a fan of the alternate reality (and for my purposes, I put alternate universe seperate from alternate reality. I will explain that in another entry).

Most ARs don't really hold the spirit of the characters, their voices. It takes an incredible writer to wonder What If Cordelia was turned by Angelus and make that vampire believable. For someone to say yes, that is how Cordelia would be if she was turned. There is a hard job to go from saying What If something changed at this point in canon to reinventing the canon completely. There is nothing I hate more than a story that is more summary, more set up, than actual story. If I have to read a page of how things are different before I get to your story, you've already lost me.

But with Whore and with Beyond Fingertips, we are in first person POV, so a lot of the alternate reality is already explained within the heads of the characters. And that is another difficult task to pull off. I'm not usually a fan of the first person POV because when it's done badly, it's terrible. Not this though.

Also, I think I enjoyed it so much because I like Angelus dark, as I've discussed before. And the Angelus in this AR is one evil, sick, sadistic bastard but him falling in love with his creation, his masterpiece, is so believable once we are inside his head. It's fantastic, dark, twisted. I love that. While I love the fluff, the family fics, sometimes I just want the dark, cruel kind of fic that leaves you gutted.

(And appropriate last.fm song is appropriate. LOL ETA: And Hungry Like The Wolf came on right afterwards. LMAO I think last.fm knows I was reading this story!)

Deep Thoughts

I've Got You Under My Skin rewatch:

I guess I should preface this write-up by saying that I'm a recovering Catholic. And as such, I kind of really love anything having to do with the more mystical side of Catholism as it were. The possessions, stigmata, miracles, etc. Always something that has fascinated me so I'm a little biased towards my love of this episode.

I think part of the reason I love it is because it addresses the idea about criminals being "born bad" as it were. Ryan is born without a soul it seems, nothing there to keep him from knowing right from wrong, to keep from say setting his house on fire because his sister got more marshmellows than he did.

I have to admit, I love the brownie scene. Poor Cordelia but hey, it's LA, everyone eats out. And Angel can always cook for her. I also love that she finds out about the Ethros box and well, I love when Cordy goes to the occult shop.

We also get the first hint that Wes didn't have a very good childhood growing up and is anyone really surprised? I mean, nobody seems to have a good father figure. Hank leaves Buffy and Joyce, Xander's dad drinks, Wes' father is verbally abusive as is Liam's father, William, Lilah, and Willow's father is non-existant, Cordy's father didn't pay his taxes causing them to lose everything. And the father in this episode is hinted at being abusive. Fred is the only one who has a stable father figure. I think someone's got issues.

I love the scene with the nun too. I had three great aunts who were nuns so whenever I see this, it totally reminds me of them. They were always so sarcastic and funny. I could so see them pulling that "he's out back" kind of a line. LOL

I'm not fond of the scenes when the demon talks because whatever voice mod they used, I can't understand a word of it. I always have to have the subtitles on the disc especially when the kid starts to talk and sometimes for the demon in the cave scenes.

Inconsistencies: None except that I can't recall seeing the occult shop again. That particular one.

Weirdness: Well, mark down this as an episode where Wes gets stabbed.

C/Aness: The whole scene after Angel calls Wes 'Doyle' and Cordelia goes to pull him out of his funk, or let him talk it out. She isn't going to just let him sit there and fester. Love it.

Fashion choices: Apparently Angel only owns that grey sweater cause that is all he has been wearing as of late. And the all black is starting to creep in.

The C/A fandom is filled with a lot of amazing people imho. If you're a member of Stranger Things, then you've probably seen us snark or vent but under that, there is respect and love. And since this fandom is filled with so many amazing people, I have to spotlight one today. Most people here know her because well, she is awesome.

damnskippytoo

Now, why did I pick her? Because this project, I couldn't do it with out her. She is the current Archivist at JustFic and from the looks of it, it's not the easiest job in the world. And like all things fandom, she only gets paid in fandom respect and love. I think some people don't realize that she has to code the stories, put them into the archive, make sure they are linked in all the right places. I can't imagine that is the fastest thing to do. There is a backlog of stories pages deep on the message board and with people always commenting on stories, it can push old ones to the front, etc. I know she tries to be as democractic as possible, doing the oldest stories first. It must take a lot of time to go back and find the oldest, or if she keeps a track, what if someone comments on an older story and it comes to the front of the pages. See? Not easy.

But when I started this project, she also told me if I found dead links or links that went to the wrong story, to tell her. I have found a few and you know what, she always fixes them like that. I send the email usually before bed and by the time I wake up, I have an email from her, telling me that it's all fixed. How is that for made of win?

Aside from being the Archivist at Stranger Things, she's also a writer, a fanartist, and overall a really great person. I know that if I ever need a gif, she is there to help me. I can bug her about tutorials for her icons, her videos. She's never been anything but nice and accomodating. Not only that, but she has other interests outside of fandom that are well, relevant to my interests. LOL I'm very proud to call her my friend. :)

Deep Thoughts

I got a late start on the fanfic reading tonight and honestly, my heart really wasn't in it. It never ceases to amaze me how much my personal life can interfere with my fandom life. I've always prided myself on keeping things in my life very compartmentalized. There is family!Kelly, fandom!Kelly, work!Kelly, friend!Kelly, responsibleadult!Kelly, carefree!Kelly. Usually I can make sure that things don't bleed into each other.

But when you have illness in your real life or something else going on, it can really put a damper on your fandom life. As soon as someone says to me that they aren't enjoying fandom or fandom activities anymore, my first thought is always that they are probably suffering from some kind of depressing. I know, weird leap to make but fandom is a hobby and when someone isn't interested in their hobbies anymore, well depression is usually the cause.

Not that I'm depressed, cause I'm not. It's just one of those things were yesterday was a when it rains, it pours kind of a day. So my desire to read fanfic, while still there, it was hard for me to get lost in the world of Cordelia/Angel. Which is a shame cause the world of Cordelia/Angel never fails to bring a smile to my face. :)

She rewatch:

Let's talk about She for a moment. I know it's regarded in the fandom as THE worst episode of Angel but honestly, I think there are worst ones (Eternity springs to mind and I will SO be talking about. For me, Smiletime is another bad one). The problem with She isn't the storyline, it's actually pretty solid. Nor is it the interaction with the gang, we get some amazing scenes. No, the problem is one person, one actor, and since she's the special guest star with a ton of lines that nobody can understand, it's a problem.

Yes, I'm talking about Miss Casting Couch herself, Bai Ling. Lemme preface that I have a big problem with women using their sexuality as a means to get ahead and from all the rumors surrounding her, Bai Ling has a set of knee pads to help her get those coveted parts in Hollywood. (Which is kind of ironic considering this episode, am I right?) So instead of talent, we get stunt casting. Casting of someone who mumbles her way through her lines, doesn't emote or enuciate. That is what makes this episode full of fail.

But let's just pretend that they cast someone else. They didn't even have to be a good actress, just decent enough to get the major plot points across. I don't think this would be looked at so badly as an episode. The story is good, we get parallels between oppressing women and how evildirtybadwrong female sexuality is. We get the awesome Angel and Wes dancing, we get the Angel bruised ego when Cordy implies Wes was cooler, we get the hilarious comment about cellphones and bored warlocks, we get the museum scene (which cracks me up every time), the funny guy at the spa (I love him), the mushing the coffee beans, and SHIRTLESS Angel people. Shirtless. Yes, shallow Kelly is shallow. There is so much win and Bai Ling just crushes it all under the weight of her no-talentness. I could have thought of a half dozen other models they could have put in there that would have done better.

Inconsistencies: Not recalling any.

Weirdness: I didn't seen any other docents at the museum and while I love that scene, wouldn't the guards know if there were docents on duty? And Angel, master of disguise there. Just button up the shirt and take off the coat, they won't recognize you. LOL

C/Aness: Well, we get the scene after the party with the poor bruised Angel ego. And most of there back and forth was adorable but really, grasping at straws in this episode.

Fashion choices: Grey button up at the party, and then the blue-grey button up at the office. Then it's back to the knit sweaters he loves so much in black.

Deep Thoughts

You know what is awesome? Cordelia/Angel fanfiction

You know what is even better? Cordelia/Angel fanfiction with s'mores.

No, seriously, stick with me for a minute here. You see, I have this little ritual developed over the nearly 70 days that I have been doing this project. First, I make myself some tea, I get myself a small snack, I set my last.fm to something I'm feeling (usually 80s, 90s, pop, artists like Lady Gaga or Scissor Sisters) and then I open JustFic. At some point during my reading, one of our foster kittens comes and joins in for the reading. Lately it's been our little runt-baby Bella. (she is adorable, btw. I need to post pics). And then I read until bedtime. It's a good system and I like having that kind of ritual.

But last night, I was so not feeling the kiwis or peaches we had in the house. Nope. I wanted something chocolate, which is odd because I'm a salt craver. But last night, nope, I was gonna make s'mores. Now microwave s'mores will never be as good as the ones you get around the campfire, no way, no how. But they are an acceptable substitute.

I started to think about how I was first introduced to s'mores. And it was through Girl Scouts, as I imagine it was for a lot of you women out there (and Boy Scouts for the men). It got me thinking too. So I pose the question I had last night to you.

Do you think Cordelia was in Girl Scouts? And more broadly, do you think any of the female members of the Buffy and Angelverse were Scouts at some point? Or what about the guys, any of them Boy Scouts? (And would you all prefer I do a tickybox poll for this?) Now, my memory is hazy and I don't remember every bit of dialogue so I can't recall if anyone did say, on screen, that they were in scouting. So if anyone else remembers, please let me know.

I will talk about my feelings later. I don't want to...skew the results as it were. LOL

Expecting Rewatch.

Well, I know I'm going to have fun with an episode when my husband says "So is this one of the ones where Cordy gets pregnant with demon spawn?" My husband, who has never seen Angel all the way through, is used to hearing me complain about it, that he knows this wasn't a one-off occasion.

Yet another one of those "sex is bad" episodes. So that makes the count two this season. And we also have the "targets girls with no families", so that is another two for this season. Can someone say reoccuring themes?

Pushing that aside, I do like the episode. A lot. I love how Wes and Angel go to bat for Cordelia, how it really seems to cement their little group. I was always a huge fan of the Angel, Cordy, Wes (and later Gunn) dynamic. I'm not a big fan of the addition to Fred and her gradual self-insert/Mary-sueness in the later seasons. And I love Lorne but I love him at Caritas. But back to Expecting...

I love the whole scene in the gun range, where Angel basically does what it takes to get the information from Wilson. The funny in this episode comes from the more unintentional things, like the doctor's office visit, rather than just a straight out gag or line. But we get to see that great Angel smile at the end when Cordy tells him she can count on him.

Inconsistencies: Not seeing any. YAY writers. But I might have missed it.

Weirdness: Okay, WHERE did Cordy get those overalls? In the words of my husband "Are we really supposed to believe that Cordelia owns something like THAT in her closet?" (God, I love him).

C/Aness: Cruising the family vibe as opposed to romantic, it's chock full of it. Angel plays protector for her, beats up the guy who did it (quite gleefully I might add), and he smiles so big at the end, you have to love that. When did he ever smile like that before LA?

Fashion choices: They grey sweater is back! Along with a navy sweater at the end. I wonder if he will continue sweaters through the late spring. Cause late spring in LA, not sweater weather. LOL

I'm on the mend! Not 100% better but getting there. However, I've got this bad combination of long story + long illness = way behind. I'm now 5.6 fics a day whereas it was up around 6.4 a week ago. I have to really start kicking some ass. I'm hoping to finish Without You tonight (I'm on Part 11 of what I think is 15 or 18). I've got 20% of the fics done on 18% of the days, which is a too close margin for me.

I will probably reply back to comments soonish. My brainfog still hasn't cleared enough for that. LOL

Somnabulist Rewatch:

Okay, I wanna complain about Kate's characterization again. I get that this is a supernatural show and not a cop drama but still, how can they write her so incompetant for the sake of story? Angel comes to visit and she has the folder open on her desk, doesn't even bother to close it. And then she proceeds to tell Angel ALL about an ongoing investigation, including showing him crime scene photos and later taking him to the work room. I mean...holy hell. And since when are cops profilers? Did Kate get a degree in psychology that we don't know about? Instead of making her a good character, they just throw it all away so Angel can have an "in" at the police station. It just annoys me to no end. Of course, my husband goes and makes a comment to cut right through my annoyance at Kate's profiling speech:

Kate: It’s unlikely that he’ll be married though he may have recently come off a long-term relationship that ended badly. We look for a precipitating event in cases such as this, and a painful breakup is always at the top of the list.

Husband: Quick! Check out Facebook database for anyone who has changed their status from in a relationship to single!

It is just that ridiculous. We get it, we are supposed to think that it's Angel so they are giving a background about Angel. Too bad it didn't even have anything to do with Penn, her little profiling.

I'm done with the Kate rant...for this episode. Let's move on to the episode on a whole. I like it. I think Penn was a good MOW. And it was nice to get some insight into Angelus' past. Unfortunately, all the characterization for Angelus seems to occur in the past. Because when he is out in present time episodes, he is kind of a pansy. I would have expected him, to stay true to character, to have slaughtered all the Scoobies or at least Joyce when he was on BTVS. And really, he didn't do anything when he gets let out in ATS S4. The only time we see how evil Angelus really is, is during flashbacks.

Inconsistencies: The major ones are the Kate ones I talked about. And how is it that it only takes a few seconds for a vampire to drain a victim. Are they like the Dyson of the demon world? They can drain all those pints in 2.5 seconds and clean up the cat hair on your couch?

Weirdness: Cordy's last shirt, the white one with the leather ties, I had that shirt back in the day in salmon pink. I wonder if the costume department shopped at Mervyns too. LOL

C/Aness: We get the line to Wes from Cordy about being Angel's friend, we get the great rooftop scene where Cordy pulls Angel out of his brood and keeps him on the path to being a champion. And well, it's clear Cordy's chained up a few people in her time. :)

Fashion choices: Angel's got on a brown sweater when Penn comes to the office. And the grey sweater at the end. Yay for the non-black on black.

Parting Gifts Rewatch:

I do love the Cordy-centric episodes, not going to lie. We get to see so much about her character and about Angel as a result. Who knew that Angel cooked? We never saw that on BTVS, that is for sure. And that he was actually pretty decent at it. Love that it's a common occurance. Oh there are so many great scenes in this. I love that Cordy tried to draw Angel out of his brood, out of his grief. Love that he made a joke. When did he ever make a joke on BTVS? I can't recall. Love that Cordy fakes a vision and tries to get away. Love that Cordy is smart enough at the auction to stall by bringing her price up. Love that she stabbed Barney with the horn. And love that she says she knew Angel would save her. Love that Angel says he won't let anything happen to Cordy. Oh yeah, and love it when DB totally skims CC's ass with his left hand. LOL OH! And we get to see Cordy's tattoo!

Best lines for me:

The entire Angel and Wes exchange in the apartment.

Angel: Hey, and behave yourself. I don’t want to find you two necking on the couch when I get back.

Angel: Nothing is going to happen to Cordelia. I won’t let it.

Cordy: I never doubted for a minute that you’d find me.

I don't have any scenes I don't like. I just love this episode all the way. :)

Weirdness: Does anyone else wish they would have kept the black lawyer for W&H? This is the only time we see her. I would have liked to see more of her, even if she went the way of Lee Mercer. I also want maor Oracles! I liked them.

Inconsistencies: My biggest issue is that for the last nine episodes, we have seen Doyle have very specific visions. He has names, addresses, specifics. But as soon as they get to Cordy, it's all with the vague-ity vague.

C/Aness: BURSTIN' with it. BURSTIN'! Just check the above. We have the kiss that Angel hesitates in and leaves him stuttering. We have Angel saving her. We have the ass skim. Oh yes, good day for C/A with this episode.

Fashion Choices: Oh Angel, you were with the all black this episode.

Hero Rewatch:

Oh Hero, talk about a tear-jerker. Sure, the whole Scourge plotline is a bit heavy handed and we get it, Nazis are bad but we do get to see Doyle finally come into his own as a hero and give his life to save his friends and others. Glenn Quinn was looking pretty rough in those flashbacks though, not just because he was supposed to but he had the serious glassy eyes going on. Hindsight I guess.

It's hard to pick favorite scenes in such a sad episode but for sure, I love the beginning, love the commercial. I love that Cordelia is trying to get their name out there and make some money. And the comments about Angel needing a costume and tights, totally perfect.

Least favorite has to be the entire Nazi subplot. I wish they could have done something less obvious there.

C/Aness: Not a whole lot outside of the hug at the end and then them watching the tape together. I think it's a pivotal bonding moment for them. Angel's accepted the fact that him and Buffy can't be and he has just lost his first real friend, a member of their small family.

Weirdness: Nothing really sticks out to me.

Inconsistencies: Now my hubby pointed this out but would the Beacon really have hurt Angel since technically he doesn't have human blood or is the fact that it is a demon in a human body enough? I mean, he's drinking pig's blood, he is technically a demon. Is a demon in a human body enough or has the demon fully taken over. Of course, as he said "Far be it for me to question the mythology of the Whedonverse." LOL (I love him)

Fashion choices: Angel didn't change much. And it was the all black/greys again.

I Will Remember You Rewatch:

I had debated not doing this one in the rewatch tbh because it's so...well, honestly I think the only good part is that we get a glimpse about the Shanshu and we meet The Oracles. I always loved The Oracles. The female cracked me up. But this whole episode is fanservice and not very well-written fanservice at that. So many of the points never get resolved or addressed again but I think that is par for the course with ATS and BTVS at times.

This episode does illustrate my fundamental problem with Buffy and Angel though. If you want to change the basic core of who and what someone is (vampire) than maybe you don't really love them. Love is warts and all, not trying to change someone into what your idea of love is. Which is what I think is what Buffy and Angel really is. It's not about realistic love, it's about an ideal. Of course, Buffy seems even more self-righteous than usual during her little speeches (in the office and in the sewer) which I think is what really irritates me. Because I like Buffy in the later seasons, I just don't like the "the whole world revolves around me cause I'm The Slayer" attitude of the early seasons.

I also have a BIG problem with the way a section of fandom treats this episode. It is made very clear by the female Oracle as well as said by Angel THREE times that the day NEVER happened. Buffy can't wind up pregnant, she isn't going to remember a day that never happened unless The Oracles or The Powers intervene. And let's face it, The Powers had nothing to do with Buffy. She wasn't one of their warriors. What advantage would she have to remember except to be even more pissed at Angel for deciding to swallow the day?

But moving on, another thing that just makes me so mad is that Angel was about to walk away from the mission, from HIS redemption. He seems to flit off and leave the mission (and the people that care about him) every single season. Oh Buffy's here, I'm human, gonna go back to Sunnydale. Oh, Darla's here, you're all fired. Oh, Buffy's dead, lemme go to Tibet for three months and leave you all to fight on your own. Oh, Wolfram and Hart offers me a deal, I'll go to the dark side even though I know that I could be a warrior for evil at some point. Angel's an idiot and honestly, sometimes I don't think he deserves to Shanshu or to earn his redemption if he wants to walk away so easily.

C/Aness: Nada. No surprise there.

Weirdness: Clearly, Buffy and Angel were the ones eating peanut butter in the bed, not Cordelia, which makes me think that they did air these out of order and that Rm w/a Vu was supposed to come after IWRY. One time I might watch in that order and see. We don't see Cordy's new apartment in any of the episodes between RM and IWRY. It's also is stupid because again, it is said over and over that the day NEVER HAPPENED. The writers can't even keep their own canon straight but does that surprise us?

And if Cordelia went to Santa Monica to get Buffy while Angel and Doyle went to The Oracles, how did Angel beat Cordelia there to kiss Buffy? Wouldn't Buffy be on her way back or on her way to her dad's? Maybe we are supposed to think she was milling around, pondering the universe?

Inconsistencies: First off, Buffy died anyway. Even if that wasn't the coming darkness. Coming darkness could be relative. It could be one year or it could be ten or twenty. The thing is, would Buffy really survive another decade? Another twenty? She wouldn't be in any shape to fight when she was pressing 50. And at the end of the series, let's face it, they weren't on speaking terms. She wasn't exactly happy he was heading up Evil Inc over here. I doubt she'd be ready to fight alongside him when this darkness came when she thinks he switched teams. And with an army of Slayers, is having a vampire with a soul on your side really that big of a deal? That would result in a shift of the balance? Doubtful.

Fashion choices: Mostly all black, except for the brief interlude with the grey sweater.
